Design Refresh | Our Living Room

Weddings

May 5, 2016

When we first moved into our house everything we owned was brand new. This was only because my apartment caught on fire in the middle of our transition and I lost everything, with the exception of a small box of linens we already had loaded on the truck. God was really watching out for us that day! I called my insurance company and discovered that my renter’s insurance policy was due to expire that same night at midnight. If that wasn’t God protecting us, I can’t say what was.

Thankfully, everyone got out safely before the whole building was consumed in flames. Including the pets.

Once our insurance claim came through we started to pick out the replacement furniture, beds, linens, clothing. That was almost 7 years ago. Since then we’ve had three dogs, two kids, and lots of visits from friends and family. Our furniture had definitely seen better days. And no matter how much washing and professional steaming I did, I think it was safe to say the dogs had completely ruined everything that was made of cloth. One by one I started to replace items. During this transition I also noticed that my style had changed. Instead of being drawn to darker reds, and browns (similar to the decor in the house in which I grew up) I found that I was now attracted to neutrals like grey and beige. I don’t know why this came as a surprise to me since coastal elements and styling plays a huge roll in how I feel about the staging of a space. I love mixing different wood tones with gold decor accents and soft, fluffy textures with more natural textures like grain and grasses.

I’m certainly no stylist and the living room is definitely not finished, but I love the direction we’re headed so far! Also, the weather here has been quite gloomy and chilly lately so I thought I’d share a fun post with a bit of a spring refresh. I hope you enjoy!!

Here’s the rascal that just about ruined the last rug we had. PS – anyone have tips on how to properly housebreak a stubborn dachshund?!

It’s actually pretty amazing when you consider how a $35 can of paint and completely transform the look of your home. We painted all of our interior doors the same dark gray color you see on the front door and it has elevated the whole second level. Goodbye builder-grade white doors that show every scuff and dust mark!

Has the spring decor bug bitten you, too?! If so, I’d love to hear what you’re updating now!
